Deutscher Orientalistentag

100th Anniversary | September 12 – 17, 2022 | FU Berlin

Practicalities

Venue

The 34th Deutscher Orientalistentag will take place on the campus of the Freie Universität Berlin in Berlin-Dahlem. The address for reference is Habelschwerdter Allee 45 – Fabeckstrasse 23 -26, 14195 Berlin.

The rooms used for the DOT are located in the building complex Rost-, Silber- and Holzlaube. The official name of the Rost- and Silberlaube is “Building Habelschwerdter Allee”, that of the Holzlaube is “Gebäude Fabeckstraße”. These are easily accessible via metro and bus (see the section “Public Transport”). Although they are connected, the Holzlaube (opened in 2015) has a very different structure from the Rost- and Silberlaube. The room numbers of the Holzlaube are according to the floor they are on. In the Rost- and Silberlaube, they are according to so-called “streets” (large corridors). For example, the room JK 26 is located in the minor corridor connecting the “streets” J and K. This structure is not necessarily intuitive for the uninitiated and the building complex is quite sprawling. Therefore, it is recommended to familiarise yourself with the floor plans, which can be found here: https://app.guide3d.com/100049/kiosk/. We will also publish floor plans modified to highlight the relevant rooms for the DOT.

The rooms used for DOT sessions are scattered all over the building complex. A particular focal point is the Seminarzentrum in the Silberlaube opposite to the cafeteria. Here there will be several large sessions and it is also the location of the central book exhibition by the sponsoring publishers.

Some parts of the supporting programme will likely take place outside the campus of the FU. The opening ceremony and the gala dinner will be held at the Henry-Ford-Bau (Garystraße 35, 14195 Berlin-Dahlem) which is about a ten to fifteen minutes’ walk from the Silberlaube.

Public Transport

The Freie Universität Berlin is easily accessible with public transit. The relevant stations are:

U-Bahnhof Dahlem-Dorf (underground line U3, bus lines X83 und M11)

U-Bahnhof Freie Universität (underground line U3)

Bus stop Hittorfstraße (bus line M11)

There is a connection to the S-Bahn (commuter train) line 1 via bus line X83 (Rathaus Steglitz, also underground line U9) and M11 (Lichterfelde-West).

On the website of the Berlin public transport (https://www.bvg.de/en) it is possible to easily obtain a travel itinerary for practical use that shows transport lines, points of transfer and times. A smartphone app by BVG is also available for the same purposes. Times and connections are generally reliable, although it is recommended to use the train lines (U- and S-Bahn) rather than the busses as traffic in the south-west of Berlin can get quite heavy at times.
